So.... remember art class. The teacher would tell you to break the complex image into it's core geometric shapes? Circles, rectangles, trapezoids and squares....? I never saw any of that crap. I saw fractured shapes. The crease of their clothes, the crook in their arm, the texture on the surface. Doing this with pen and paper for years got tiresome, so I quit.
Now I use a Wacom pad and Manga studio Debut 4.
Manga Studio has some of the tones (like in paper comics and Manga comics) built right in. I used them to emphasize the piece to great affect.
